High-Fat Diet During Puberty Linked to Breast Cancer Risk Later in Life
ScienceDaily (Sep. 1, 2010) — Girls eating a high-fat diet during puberty, even those who do not become overweight or obese, may be at a greater risk of developing breast cancer later in life, according to Michigan State University researchers.
The implications -- that a high-fat diet may have detrimental effects independent of its effect to cause obesity -- could drive new cancer prevention efforts. Click here to read more.
Weight Loss May Help Hot Flashes
Results from the six-month trial, conducted among 154 women, showed that overweight and obese postmenopausal women reported a significant improvement in hot flushes after an intensive behavioral weight-loss program.
Around a third of those assigned to the weight-loss intervention had a self-reported improvement. The program included counseling, education, dietary modification, and use of meal-replacement products. Participants also were encouraged to increase physical activity to at least 200 minutes per week.
HPV Vaccine Effective at Four Years
A four-year study of 17,000 women in North America, Latin America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region show that the vaccine against human papillomavirus effectively prevents lesions caused by infection both with virus types contained in the vaccine and, to a lesser extent, other serotypes for up to four years.

Grand Re-Opening Party a success



Reno, NV – The May 12 Grand Re-Opening of the newly remodeled WHS offices was a great success. Over a hundred patients, staffers, friends and colleagues, including the mayor of Sparks, showed up to celebrate the new space.

Diet can sharply cut Alzheimer's risk - U.S. study
CHICAGO (Reuters) - A diet rich in olive oil, nuts, fish, poultry and certain fruits and vegetables may have a powerful effect at staving off Alzheimer's disease, researchers reported on Monday.
People who ate nutrients specifically selected for brain health had a 40 percent lower risk of developing Alzheimer's disease compared with others, Yian Gu, an Alzheimer's disease researcher at Columbia University in New York and colleagues found.

Hot flash study still enrolling
Reno, NV – Women's Health Specialists of Nevada is offering a clinical trial to female patients suffering from menopausal hot flashes. The trial is for the use of Neurontin to treat menopausal symptoms. Neurontin is a non-hormonal medication that has been in use since 1993 to treat epilepsy and other seizure disorders.
This is a Phase 3 drug trial meaning the drug has already been proven safe and effective through two previous phases. Phase 3 is done immediately prior to FDA approval.
